Allergies / ill-functioning immune system in pets can be frustrating to pet and owner. The typical treatment is the use of steroids, antihistamines and antibiotics, w occasionally powerful anti-fungal and yeast treatments. All at best only placate symptoms, and in time will deplete the innate immune system. There is also a lifetime limit on the use of steroids- often exceeded in these situations. Kidney failure often follows and often, then,  the demise of pet.

Pets in this cases are “allergic” to many things, particularly topical exposures to the skin, and ingredients in the diet.

For topical irritants: (ie lawn sprays, laundry detergent, floor cleaners … etc)

I leave a vinegar tub outside all day and start w fresh batch next day- unless it’s raining- in which case it gets muddied quickly, and I’ll change mid-day. This is to remove topical irritants from routine spraying of grassy areas both in your neighborhood and at dog parks. Dunk feet upon re-entry to hone after each outing. Spray or rag soak tummy if they laid down. Soak all over if they rolled.

With my home boarding business- I can have many feet to dip and it is impractical for me to dump and change in-between each dog or outing. Many outings daily too – every 2 hours at a minimum. Change daily or as needed. Up to 50:50 solution of vinegar-water – but less works too. I use a cat litter pan for this.

Although- I have control over my current yard and live at the end of a road with a wild green field a house away. Never are either sprayed with chemicals – so this place is much more innately dog/cat-friendly. Great benefit.

I recently piggy-backed on a customer vet appointment w DR Nancy Keller, with the owner of a training dog, Mango. Mango suffered from an allergy-related ailment, due to the diet.

I was very pleased with all the recommendations by Dr. Keller. It’s piece by piece- exactly what I’ve done for a similar dog, a Brussels Griffon x Maltese, Oliver (Olly, )that I provided husbandry wellness care for, over an extended period of time.

Oliver’s owner also owns a Boston Terrier named Tuff with a severe neurological deficit who spent 14 Mo with me while human went to drug detox, 3 Mo rehab, 6 mo halfway house. She wouldn’t get help for herself for unwillingness to abandon her dogs. Both dogs were in neglect. Much suffering amongst the 3 of them. Oliver’s skin was bright pink from head to toe with inflammation. Tuff was losing feeling in limbs, with a negative effect on gait.  Both dogs were treated in my home for 14 months.

The Owner recently got her 1 yr sobriety medallion! I’m SO PROUD OF HER!

Tuff’s disease progression is thwarted ( he will always have a mild disability),  and Olly’s immune system is receiving regular attention – both now also converted to raw diet

GREAT results for Olly- who was bright pink from afar- and with 6-8 quarter sized eruptions on his skin- green eye discharge, skin thickened like that of a rhino from chronic inflammation, inflamed feet, infected ears, and itching to the point of disrupting his sleep and feeding. He growled when lifted/ picked up. Truly a sad state. He was in significant distress. It took 13 months to see a brilliant boy emerge. But the personality that unfolded then, was profoundly upbeat and happy- very engaged. That side of him was buried in discomfort.

The rule of thumb with homeopathic/ herbal/ natural treatment is 1-3 month of aid, for every year in lack of health. More so with the layering of issues. It’s often important in drastic cases, to isolate priorities, and start there, without bombarding the entire systems of the dog at once. And so some maladies must “wait their turn”

I also often start with a 10 to 30- day detox of the 5 eliminative organs of the body- to make the body strong enough to handle recovery and recovery efforts. Much toxin is released from fat cells during recovery. That can result in acute kidney or liver failure. Go slow and have patience.

Oliver, 14 months later, became a fit and normal dog. he has bounding energy, snuggles when he sleeps and has returned to his natural grey skin tone. Tuff, has a bounce in his step, runs, and doesn’t stand on the backs of his front paws as often. Both are very fit and shiny from the raw diet.

As far as Mango, after treatment from Dr. Keller, she is holding down more food, with less itching, and more resolved skin maladies. Since Mango’s suffered for 3 years with the allergy-related afflictions, it’ll be more time, before we see the more complete reformation, as is evident in Tuff and Oliver.

I’d like to take a moment, though, to give accolade, to Dr. Keller, a natural and homeopathic veterinarian.  Dr. Keller is taking a sensible and slow approach. I feel like Mango is in great hands. I will ABSOLUTELY refer her with confidence now, vs with that disclaimer that “I’ve got no personal experience with her.” Thank-you for including me in this veterinary appointment.

I think she was SPOT-ON!

I have developed a PHENOMENAL skin malady protocol, inclusive of dietary changes, herbal and homeopathic supplementation, and shampoo plus topical treatment, that heals skin for good (vs just controlling itching or secondary bacterial infections) and creates more innately resilient skin ongoing.  I’d LOVE to help your pet if he or she is afflicted with chronic skin ailments.
